Medication Administration

There are 6 Rights of Medication Administration.

The 4 routes of administering medicine that are approved for care givers are: inhalation, ingestion, instillation and topical.

Inhalation is a way of administrating medicine via spray or vapour.

Ingestion is a way of administrating medicine through swallowing or absorption.

Topical is a way of administrating medicine through creams, gels or ointments.

Instillation is a way of administrating medicine through drops (eyes/ears etc.)

Pro Re Nata (PRN) medicines are given as and when required.

The 4 routes of administering medicine that care givers are not allowed to perform are: infusion, injection, per rectum and per vagina.The goal when caring for someone is to keep them as independent as possible. The level of support should never be changed without a line manager being made aware of changes to dependence levels.
